Metuchen, NJ – May 23, 2022 – Meet Dr. Tobin Ansel, the local expert who is passionate about changing children’s lives through Myopia Management.

Myopia (nearsightedness) usually starts in childhood and without treatment, progresses as children get older and their eye grows longer and longer.  With the increase in screen time largely due to online learning during COVID, myopia is progressing at more rapid levels than ever before.

Myopia is currently the subject of research worldwide, directed towards understanding the development of this condition and how we can prevent it, or at least slow its progression. The number of people affected by myopia is now increasing around the world, and is projected to affect 50% of the world population by 2050, due mainly to lifestyle factors.

Dr. Tobin Ansel notes that high myopia has also been linked with the risk of sight threatening complications later in life, like glaucoma, cataract and retinal detachment. Myopia worsened during the pandemic and it often gets worse throughout childhood into early adulthood.

“I can’t think of any other situation where parents would just sit by and watch their child’s condition worsen, yet that’s exactly what’s happening when children need stronger and stronger glasses each year.  Glasses or contacts help you see better, but those don’t do anything to stop the progression of nearsightedness. The progression CAN be slowed, and many parents are not even aware that this can be done” said Dr. Tobin Ansel

Dr. Ansel is the director of the myopia management program at Metuchen Vision (Metuchen NJ) and Somerset Eye Care (North Brunswick NJ).

Myopia management uses different proven treatment strategies – overnight contact lenses (orthokeratology), specialty daytime contact lenses, or prescription eye drops to slow the rapid eye growth that occurs in nearsighted children.

Once you know Dr. Ansel, it’s easy to understand why he is so passionate about myopia treatment.  He himself was fit with overnight contact lenses while he was in high school.  These significantly slowed the progression of his own nearsightedness and allowed him to see clearly without the need for glasses or contacts all day.

After he suffered an eye injury in college, and saw first-hand the difference that a skilled and caring doctor made in his comfort and well-being, he had no doubt that his career path would be optometry.

Dr. Ansel has a great interest in myopia management and has done significant research in this field. He is passionate about helping his patients keep their eyes healthy and happy for life, and educating his colleagues so that they can do the same.

Recently, Dr. Ansel was a guest on the Health411 podcast titled ”The Myopia epidemic and you”. He was featured as an expert in Myopia Management where he lent his professional insight on the pathology, symptoms, and treatments of Myopia.  He also presented a continuing education course to his colleagues entitled “Myopia Management: From Theory to Practice”

Dr. Ansel plans to continue to build a leading-edge myopia management practice at his two New Jersey offices, and provide preventative care to area youth.  He says, “Treating the eyes of our children through this program, before significant problems arise, is the best way we can ensure long term vision health for the future generation.”
