Mike “Tate” Tetreault found success when he started as an agent. But he could not ignore the outdated practices of the brokers he did business with. So, he created The Tate Team, his independently owned real estate brokerage to revive the industry.

As an agent, Tate noticed there was a serious lack of creativity and action as the brokers he worked with were too scared to take any chances, clinging too tightly to tradition. He really saw no need for an office, as most client interactions took place at the property they owned or wanted to buy. As a result, The Tate Team operates as a virtual brokerage. “So that’s where I saw a big opportunity for disruption and change in the industry… Once COVID hit, it only reinforced my idea to make my brokerage 100% virtual,” says Mike “Tate” Tetreault.

Tate allows no one to box him in. From school, to peer pressure, to authority figures, and work, he has always been a creative, free thinker. Tate has always known he would create his own success, rather than working a 9 to 5 for someone else. Paving the way for agents in the real estate industry is the best way for him to live his vision. White baby boomers and Karens dominate the real estate industry, creating barriers for a younger generation of non-privileged agents from finding success. But Tate is changing this power shift. He’s building a team of dynamic agents from diverse backgrounds. “We’ve had enough, and The Tate Team is a breath of fresh air in the brokerage universe. My goal is to expand into as many markets as possible, get the conversation going and show the industry modern ways to be successful,” says Mike “Tate” Tetreault.

In today’s society, attention gets you money and power. That’s why Tate believes that attention in business will get you further than an Ivy League education ever can. Textbook methods of marketing can only get you so far, and if you don’t put your personality into it, you will be boring. And no one likes boring. That’s why Tate pays the most brilliant minds to keep innovating. He is always looking for a better way to do things and looking toward what’s next. “My goal has always been, you could take me or any one of our agents, drop us in some random state somewhere where we know nobody, and we could still generate tons of business, no problem,” says Mike “Tate” Tetreault.

The Tate Team sets itself apart in that it is a 100% sole proprietorship. Tate never wants to compromise his vision by allowing outside influence, so he doesn’t have a business partner or franchise calling the shots. He also doesn’t have loans or other debt, so everything rests on him. To raise funds, he makes moves that may seem risky to outsiders, but he believes in betting on himself, and he’s confident in his agents. Tate has raised money by taking everything that is earned each month and reinvesting it constantly back into the business. He continued to do this for a long time without taking any profits. But to him, it was worth the effort to maintain full control over all aspects of his business.
