Jesus Mendoza is on the path to finishing his teaching degree at Rolando Elementary School, where he recently took a leave of absence as the school’s custodian. The faculty and students are excited to have Mr. Mendoza on board as a student-teacher.

In December 2019, Jesus Mendoza began working as a nighttime custodian at Rolando Elementary School. Little did he know that a couple of years later, in August of 2021, he would have the opportunity to be a student-teacher at the same school. After completing his teaching program with a full scholarship to Sanford Harmony, Jesus began the student teaching portion of his degree this fall with 3rd-grade teacher, Mrs. Eleni Tolar. Then he moved on to his second student teaching experience with Mr. Jeffrey Javier, Rolando’s 5th/6th-grade combo teacher.

Jesus has developed a fantastic relationship not only with the students and teachers at Rolando Elementary School, but also with Senior Custodian Joe Hernandez. The two were described as a “stellar team, especially through our school shut down and distance learning through the pandemic.” Jesus has a natural ability to understand what teachers need regarding classroom cleanliness and strong organizational skills to prioritize items of importance.  He’s known for his tremendous attention to detail, which shines in every area he works on around the campus.

Noelle Suffield, the principal at Rolando Elementary, said the following about Jesus and his journey to becoming a teacher: “We were honored to be able to place him here at Rolando for his student teaching. The transition from custodian to student-teacher has been seamless, as Jesus has already developed relationships with teachers, staff, students, and families. Mr. Mendoza is a natural. To see him in action with students is magical. He brings a sense of calm to the classroom while holding the highest standards. Jesus is optimistic and brings this with him to school each day. He is just as eager to learn as he is to take over all teaching responsibilities confidently. Rolando is happy to be a part of Jesus’ path to a life-long career in education.”
