NBA MVP Race: Here Are the Frontrunners for the MVP Award this Season

November 17 19:42 2021

It’s been almost a month since the NBA 2021-2022 started and we finally had the chance to see athletes play their game on the court. Of course, these matches wouldn’t be too enjoyable, and dare we say, complete, without the MVP discussions.

Before the regular season started, fans were gunning for the usual contenders. Some boldly took a leap of faith and aired out some dark horses in the MVP race. And since patrons have already seen a number of games, one can say that however these athletes are playing early this season, it could already be their typical performance all throughout.

Here’s the list of the top three NBA players who are currently leading the MVP race:

Top 3: Jimmy Butler, Miami Heat

Jimmy Butler is the reason why the Miami Heat is enjoying their comfortable fourth spot in the Eastern Conference. Butler is carrying the whole team by playing his all-time best, averaging 23.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 2.1 steals in Heat’s first 11 games.

What’s even more interesting is that Butler ranks number one among NBA players in offensive win shares. Meaning, his score contributions are the main reasons for the wins of the Miami Heat.

Being an MVP means that a player can translate those scores into wins; and Jimmy Butler does the job. If he becomes consistent on his offense, it would be possible for this forward to win the most-coveted individual award in the NBA.

Top 2: Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors

The whole Warriors gang currently enjoys the sole first spot in the Western Conference, thanks to the shooting efforts of Stephen Curry. This sharpshooter now has two Best Player of the Week awards in his bag earlier this season, garnering an average of 28.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 1.7 steals.

Curry is known for his ridiculous offense. That’s why it’s no surprise that his 39% rainbow area shooting average is considered as his usual performance. However, this guard is also showing range by being in the top 5 players that are playing good defense this season. Talk about versatility.

With Curry and the Warriors being on a roll, if Curry were to become the MVP for 2021-2022, it would be considered as one of the ‘I-told-you-so’s’ NBA stories.

Top 1: Kevin Durant, Brooklyn Nets

Kevin Durant is doing the almost impossible task: to carry a budding team without the help of a possible sidekick. Although the Brooklyn Nets is currently at the third spot in the Eastern Conference, all those wins had been tiring and difficult. With a supposedly powerhouse team, Durant is the only one who’s making an effort as James Harden is still struggling, and of course, Kyrie Irving is still ineligible to play because he’s unvaccinated.

Durant has been putting up stellar statistics (31.6 points, 7.9 rebounds and 5.0 assists), throughout the Nets’ seven last games. With one MVP award on his hand, the superstar forward can still pick up his Slim Reaper alter ego and continue bagging wins for his team.

Since the MVP award is given to an athlete who’s made the largest impact for their team, Kevin Durant has the biggest chance of getting it, so far. That’s if his performance in the coming matches will remain outstanding.
