Classic Eyelash Extensions Through the Ages Uncovered

October 16 18:28 2020

Classic eyelash extension specialists O.P. Lashes Studio have been tracking the history of the beauty phenomenon that dates back to Egyptian and Roman times for its customers.

OP Studio have created a stir among many of their customers who weren’t aware of the history behind having luscious lashes.

A spokeswoman for O.P. Lashes Studio said: “Many people think classic last extensions are a modern day beauty trend, but people have been manipulating their lashes for thousands of years.

“The celebrity culture has put such a focus on beauty and skincare regimes, we forget that the Egyptians were obsessed with beauty practices and used tinting and brushes to get long and fluttering lashes.

“The Romans did everything they possibly could to achieve long lashes after a famous philosopher said that long lashes were linked to a respected and upstanding member of the community.

“A list actors or reality TV show stars are far from being the first to take the length of their lashes seriously. Silent movie actresses donned their version of false eyelashes and in the golden age of film, stars like Rita Hayworth, Judy Garland and Marilyn Monroe were all on set or heading out and about in Hollywood sporting falsies. Many male journalists criticized the trend for a long time, but the trend took over and they became a staple content of a Hollywood make up artist’s kit bag,” she added.

In the 1950s, the manufacturers moved from huma hair to plastic false eyelashes. Then in the 1960s, the classic Hollywood glamour look was ditched for bold and brilliant eyelashes with matching make up, and a particular emphasis on the bold lower lashes, which had not been a focus before. Model Twiggy created her doll eyes with fake lashes and liquid eyeliner.

Lash extensions died a death during the 70s and 80s, but in the 1990s and 2000s the trend resurged with the bombshells looks from the likes of Cindy Crawford, Anna Nicole Smith and Pamela Anderson who would knock a man over with the batting of their eyelashes.

The spokeswoman added: “The trend has continued grow and with the modern day social media and celebrity culture putting a huge focus on sharing selfies and how people look, the demand for eyelash extensions has grown and the technology behind the beauty treatment has evolved hugely.

“We have a whole range of people of all ages coming to us wanting eyelash extensions. It is nice that this is available to masses now, whereas in the past it was more focused on the celebrity set or the high echelons of society. It has been a fascinating experience to find out about these beauty regimes through the ages and fun sharing it with our clients,” she added.
